News update: June 13, 2011

Over the weekend, J.J. Abrams’ latest movie “Super 8” grossed an estimated $37 million, $38 million including its midnight showings.

Paramount has to be pretty thrilled with the result, despite opening significantly lower than, say, “The Hangover Part II” or “Fast Five.” “Super 8” has two things going for it: A modest budget of about $50 million and strong word of mouth.

I’m predicting a small drop-off next weekend. If it really plays its cards right, I believe “Super 8” could be in first-run theaters until late July or early August, even with thick competition every week this summer. We’ll see.

Here’s the rest of the box office according to The Box Office Mojo.

1.“Super 8” – $37M
2.“X-Men: First Class” – $25M
3.“The Hangover Part II” – $18.5M
4.“Kung Fu Panda 2” – $16.6M
5.“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” – $10.8M

Trailer of the day:

Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys and Aliens” is one of the few summer movies left that I’m really excited about. Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell, it hits theaters July 29. Take a look at the latest trailer that Universal debuted last week.
