Summit Entertainment has announced it will release Duncan Jones’ “Source Code” on video on demand Friday, July 8, more than two weeks before its Blu-ray and DVD release on Tuesday, July 26.
The studio says that the release “will test the demand for viewing a bigger budgeted film digitally prior to the release of physical discs.”
It will be fun to watch how this plays out, considering some smaller studios, such as Magnolia, have already been releasing films on demand before they even hit theaters. If this experiment is financially successful, you might see studios practicing this form of release more often.
