News update: May 29, 2011

Deadline reported today that Brazilian actress Alice Braga (“Redbelt,” “Predators”) will star in “District 9” director Neil Blomkamp’s latest project “Elysium.”

Very little is known about the film or Braga’s role in the movie. What is known is that “Elysium” will star Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and William Fichtner, and Sony currently has it set for a March 2013 release.

Box office numbers are in, and “The Hangover Part II” is the clear winner with $86.5 million for the three-day, bringing its total to $118 million with Monday still to go.

The other stand-out this weekend was Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life,” coming off its Palme d’Or win at Cannes, averaging $88,000 per screen on only four screens, bringing its three-day total to $352,000.

1.“The Hangover Part II” – $86.5M
2.“Kung Fu Panda 2” – $48M
3.“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” – $39.1M
4.“Bridesmaids” – $16.3M
5.“Thor” $9.4M

Craig Gillespie’s remake of “Fright Night,” starring Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin hits theaters Aug. 19.
