News update: May 25, 2011

Collider has confirmed that Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale, wife of director Len Wiseman, have been confirmed for the female leads in the upcoming “Total Recall” remake directed by Wiseman. Strangely enough, The Hollywood Reporter has also confirmed that Bill Nighy will star in the movie.

Suffice it to say, it’s a glorious day for “Total Recall” fans.

The movie, which stars Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston, is scheduled for an August 2012 release. What are your thoughts on the recent casting news?

Showblitz has exclusively reported that 20th Century Fox has narrowed down its search for directors to take on “The Wolverine” after Darren Aronofsky’s (“Black Swan”) departure.

Here’s the shortlist: Jose Padilha (“Elite Squad”), Doug Liman (“Fair Game,” The Bourne Identity”), Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), Mark Romanek (“Never Let Me Go”), Justin Lin (“Fast Five” among other “Fast” movies), Gavin O’Connor (“Pride and Glory”), James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma,” Knight and Day”) and Gary Shore (…hmm?).

I must say, this is actually an incredible list of directors, even though I’m completely unfamiliar with Shore. Any of the above can do the job (I’m going to assume Shore has skills), but who’s best for the project? I’m going against the grain and saying Justin Lin, because I would like to see him do something on a large scale that isn’t about cars. Not to slam “Fast and Furious.”

They’ll probably go with Brett Ratner.

Box office predictions:

Here are my rough box office predictions for this weekend. I’m including the holiday and, if I’m right, it’s going to be a huge one.

1.“The Hangover Part II” – $107M
2.“Kung Fu Panda 2” – $93M
3.“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” – $53M
4.“Bridesmaids” – $18.5M
5.“Thor” – $10M

It’s really a total crapshoot and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m probably way off. We’ll see.

Trailer of the day:

Shield your eyes, it’s Jim Carrey in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” I’ll be the first to say that I love penguins, but I’m definitely not going to pay to see this one.

I don’t think that a lot of Total Recall fans think this is a glorious day, unless that was sarcasm? Len Wiseman taking on this remake is not cool at all…I like Farrell in the film and think he’ll do a fine job, but all I have to say is…yeesh. This is not looking promising at all, and I’m not saying that as a Total Recall fan, but as a film fan. We’ll see how it turns out, though.

Also, you got your Brett Ratner dig in! Thumbs up for that…
